"Saddleback" is an old literary name for Mt. Greylock. The name comes from the southern profile of the mountain as seen from Pittsfield, and points south. Hemmingway, Mellville, and Thorough can all be quoted referring to Mt. Greylock as Saddleback.
Saddleback is not simply a shop for "Backpacking", but rather a resource for people who wish to enjoy all of the outdoor recreation opportunities the Berkshires have to offer. We seek to foster an appreciation of natural places, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage the use of local natural areas for "self-propelled, low-impact wilderness recreation".
The Saddleback Trading Post consists of three important and interdependent business areas including retail sales, equipment rentals and repairs, and guided backcountry programming for all abilities. We strive to provide every product or service that one might need to safely and responsibly enjoy wilderness recreation in the Berkshires.
(Ryan Auge' owns and operates Saddleback Trading Post in North Adams, MA. Starting in the summmer of '04 Ryan will be contributing alot of new hikes to Berkshire Hiking as well as other information about kayak/canoe runs, bike paths, and other fun outdoor activies.)
